First, fill in the blanks with the appropriate word and/or its word form. Your vocab words to use for this are: export, import, and function.

China’s economy has grown very quickly over the last 30 years due to the number of

It is almost impossible to name a product that Americans use that is not 2) __________from China – toys, clothes, electronics, and furniture. Blog Title: Q2, Week 6 Critical Reading Passage

Assignment:
STEP 1: Read the following critical readig passage.

Should there be more restrictions on credit card use?“Credit" is a contract between a consumer and the bank, a credit card company, or another lender. Credit cards are different from ATM or debit cards which make withdrawals directly from people’s checking accounts. In today's credit-dependent society, credit card use is viewed as normal. The average household credit debt is about $10,000. It is clear that many people use credit cards irresponsibly. When credit card companies issue credit to consumers, they do so based on their credit score, not the amount of credit a consumer can necessarily afford to pay back based on their income. When consumers run into trouble financially, high interest rates and aggressive late fees make it very difficult for them to pay off their credit card debt. The impact of this is that it hurts the economy.Credit card abuse is when people who do not have the income to support their credit card purchases, excessively and irresponsibly use them to finance what they buy and to pay their bills. Credit cards are widely used in the United States economy amounting to billions of dollars in credit card debt.

STEP 2 - Answer the following questions in a 5-sentence paragraph.
- When people abuse their credit cards they can seek help from consumer credit counselors, debt management companies, or they may need to file for bankruptcy.
- What would you do if someone gave you a credit card with a $20,000 limit?
- What would you do if the credit card company asked for all of their money back and 10% interest on what you had spent?
- What are some of the consequences of bankruptcy?

Blog Title: Q2, Week 5 - Critical Reading Passage
Assignment - Read the passage below and answer the questions. You don't have to use the vocabulary words, but you must write at least five sentences and use COMPLETE SENTENCES.

Are cell phones safe to use while driving?

Twenty years ago cell phones were a new concept. Now, most people use cell phones because they allow you to talk when and where you want, do business on the road, and enjoy music, video, messaging and Internet features. Cell phones are powerful telecommunications devices, but are they safe? Many studies have shown an increased risk of car accidents related to cell phone use while driving. A handful of states assessed the risk and have made hand-held cell phone use illegal while operating a car. The message seems to be that if you use a hands-free device, you are safe. A growing number of studies relate that any kind of phone use (even hands-free) while driving leads to an increase in accidents. In addition, statistics show that reaction time for drivers talking on a cell phone is similar to that of a drunk driver. This argument implies that the most effective legislation would ban the use of cell phones by drivers in cars; however, this concept faces strong opposition from the telecommunications industry and auto manufacturers. If everyone on the road were unable to use their cell phones, life would be very different. Business transactions would slow and wireless providers would lose millions of dollars.

Answer the questions:
1. Is it dangerous to use a cell phone while driving?
2. Should cell phones be banned completely while driving or are they safe to use with hand-free devices?

Blog Title: Week 4 Critical Reading Passage
Assignment:
*** Read the critical reading passage below and answer the questions at the end.
*** Find the definitions for your vocabulary words: perceive, impact, and structure.

Have social networking sites had a negative impact on our society? The popularity of social networking sites such as Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Classmates.com more than quadrupled from 2005 to 2009. Many users say the sites have made a positive impact on our society, but others perceive social networking as dangerous with few benefits.People that favor social networking sites argue that these online communities promote increased communication with friends and family, familiarize people with valuable computer skills, and create a more global community. Even the structure of job hunting has changed with many people finding jobs through social networks. On the other hand, people who are against social networking sites perceive them as places that expose children to predators, increase vulnerability to computer viruses, lower worker productivity, and can result in shorter attention spans.

Answer the following questions:
1) Do you think social networking sites have made a positive or negative impact on your life and our society?
2) How have social networking sites changed the structure of social relationships?
3) As of 2011, it is legal for colleges and businesses to view the social networking profiles of applicants. Do you think that is a violation of their privacy?

Blog Title: Q2, Week 4 Critical Reading Passage - Should Human Cloning Be Allowed?

Assignment:
*** Read the following passage.
*** Answer the questions at the bottom of the passage. Minimum of FIVE sentences. You DO NOT have to use your vocabulary words (you'll do that one tomorrow -- this is just your free response).

Should human cloning be allowed?

Cloning became a hot topic when Dolly the Sheep was cloned from an identical sheep in 1997. Cloning basically equates to creating a genetic twin. There is no evidence that human cloning has occurred yet, but it is believed that scientists have the ability to do so. Most countries have evaluated the pros and cons of human cloning and limited or outlawed it. If you look at this in a different context, there are human clones among us right now. They are identical twins, created naturally, not in a lab. Supporters of human cloning say that it could help couples who are struggling with conceiving a baby. More importantly, many people say that human cloning could be used to save lives by cloning a diseased liver or heart or to replace a body part like an arm. In this context, human cloning may not be such a bad thing.Opponents of human cloning say that people are “playing God” and they equate that with going against many people’s religious beliefs. Some people fear that scientists could create “superhumans” that would be bred as super-soldiers or super-athletes which would make it impossible for non-cloned humans to compete with them.

ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS
Evaluate the consequences of cloning people and consider whether clones would have the same rights as “non-cloned” people. What if people decided to clone their babies from famous people? How might clones be different from the original person? Would you want to clone yourself?

*** Read the Critical Reading Passage and answer the questions at the end.

Do violent video games contribute to youth violence?

Ninety-seven percent of twelve to seventeen year olds in the U.S. played video games in 2008, thus fueling an $11.7 billion domestic video game industry. In 2008, ten of the top twenty best-selling video games in the U.S. involved violence.

Violent video games have been blamed for school shootings, increases in the percentage of students being bullied, and violence towards women. Critics say that these games make players less sensitive to real-life violence, reward players for simulating violence, and that children interpret them to mean violence is an acceptable way to resolve conflicts.

Video game advocates interpret the research on this topic as deeply flawed and say that there is no relationship between video games and social violence. They argue that violent video games may reduce violence by serving as a substitute for rough and tumble play and by providing a safe outlet for aggressive and angry feelings.

ANSWER THESE QUESTIONS IN ONE PARAGRAPH. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO USE YOUR WORDS.

Do kids who are involved with playing violent video games tend to be more aggressive? If and when you have children, will you let them play violent video games? Are there benefits to playing violent video games?

Your afternoon blog assignment is as follows:

BLog Title: Week 10 Definitions and Critical Reading Passage
Assignment: Your vocabulary words this week are: consent, criteria, and emphasis
*** Find the definitions for each word.
*** Read the critical reading passage & answer the questions at the end (5 sentence minimum)

Should doctors be allowed to help critically ill patients commit suicide?

The word euthanasia was coined in the 17th century by Francis Bacon who defined it as “an easy, painless, and happy death.” Today, it refers to when a doctor consents to help a critically ill patient commit suicide by injecting him or her with a drug that causes death; critically ill means that they have a disease or illness which will result in death.

Supporters of doctors who assist critically ill patients to die say that people have the right to end their lives in a painless and dignified way. One could say that a person’s right “to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness” includes the right to decide to free oneself from a painful disease or illness. Doctors who support euthanasia emphasize that the criteria for consenting to help a patient die is that the patient is suffering from a terminal illness, has a poor quality of life, and has made a conscious decision to end his/her life.

Critics of euthanasia say that doctors take an oath to protect patients. Assisting them to end their lives goes against that promise. Opponents also emphasize the possibility of doctors taking this too far by helping the poor and disabled end their lives. Religious critics say that doctor-assisted suicide goes against God’s will. Others fear that a patient's age and inability to pay medical bills may be used as criteria to determine who lives and who dies.

As of 2011, the Supreme Court has ruled against euthanasia, but many patients are still asking doctors for assistance.

Do you think that euthanasia should be an individual right or should it be determined by the courts? Is there a chance that physician-assisted suicide could go too far?

Thursday, October 13

Good morning and afternoon my favorite students of all time!

Here is your daily vocab assignment. Please read the directions carefully, as the guidelines to your assignment have slightly changed...

Blog Title: Week 9 Vocab Defintions and Close Reading Passage
Assignment:

** Your week 9 vocabulary words are: alternative, previous, and strategy.
For each word, find its definition and at least one synonym to go with it.

** Read the critical reading passage below. Then, read the questions at the end and write a 5-sentence response. You need to answer all the questions. Your answer should be in complete sentences.

Should junk food be banned from school vending machines?

As childhood obesity and diabetes increases in this country, many Americans blame schools for selling unhealthy foods to students in order to make a profit for the schools. In previous years, schools have sold many high-fat and high-sugar items to their students, including cafeteria food in which the main vegetable is too often french fries.

Supporters of a junk food ban say that if parents are not going to provide healthy snacks for their children, then the school has no alternative other than to force healthy eating. One strategy some schools are using is providing tasty snacks for their students that are lower in sugar and fat content.

Critics argue that students are going to get junk food from alternative places anyway, so why not benefit from the sale of them? Additionally, childhood obesity is not going to decrease as a result of banning junk food sales; it involves a lot more than that. In previous decades, junk food items were sold on campuses, and yet the obesity rate was lower than it is now. Also, people say that this is taking away students’ freedom of choice and that the strategy of banning junk food will only make students want it more.

ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS USING COMPLETE SENTENCES. Response should be a MINIMUM (that means AT LEAST) FIVE sentences.
Is it the schools' job to decide what students should or should not eat? Are school vending machines really full of junk food? Does keeping junk food out of vending machines really teach kids to eat better?
