Happy Halloween!

Good morning and happy halloween!

As you come in, you just need to complete your vocabulary blog....

Blog Title: Week 2 Vocabulary Defintions & Critical Reading Passage
Assignment:
Your vocabulary words this week are: Interpret, Involve, and Percent

*** Find the DEFINTIONS for each word.
*** Read the Critical Reading Passage and answer the questions at the end.

Do violent video games contribute to youth violence?

Ninety-seven percent of twelve to seventeen year olds in the U.S. played video games in 2008, thus fueling an $11.7 billion domestic video game industry. In 2008, ten of the top twenty best-selling video games in the U.S. involved violence.

Violent video games have been blamed for school shootings, increases in the percentage of students being bullied, and violence towards women. Critics say that these games make players less sensitive to real-life violence, reward players for simulating violence, and that children interpret them to mean violence is an acceptable way to resolve conflicts.

Video game advocates interpret the research on this topic as deeply flawed and say that there is no relationship between video games and social violence. They argue that violent video games may reduce violence by serving as a substitute for rough and tumble play and by providing a safe outlet for aggressive and angry feelings.

ANSWER THESE QUESTIONS IN ONE PARAGRAPH. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO USE YOUR WORDS.

Do kids who are involved with playing violent video games tend to be more aggressive? If and when you have children, will you let them play violent video games? Are there benefits to playing violent video games?

Your afternoon blog assignment is as follows:

BLog Title: Week 10 Definitions and Critical Reading Passage
Assignment: Your vocabulary words this week are: consent, criteria, and emphasis
*** Find the definitions for each word.
*** Read the critical reading passage & answer the questions at the end (5 sentence minimum)

Should doctors be allowed to help critically ill patients commit suicide?

The word euthanasia was coined in the 17th century by Francis Bacon who defined it as “an easy, painless, and happy death.” Today, it refers to when a doctor consents to help a critically ill patient commit suicide by injecting him or her with a drug that causes death; critically ill means that they have a disease or illness which will result in death.

Supporters of doctors who assist critically ill patients to die say that people have the right to end their lives in a painless and dignified way. One could say that a person’s right “to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness” includes the right to decide to free oneself from a painful disease or illness. Doctors who support euthanasia emphasize that the criteria for consenting to help a patient die is that the patient is suffering from a terminal illness, has a poor quality of life, and has made a conscious decision to end his/her life.

Critics of euthanasia say that doctors take an oath to protect patients. Assisting them to end their lives goes against that promise. Opponents also emphasize the possibility of doctors taking this too far by helping the poor and disabled end their lives. Religious critics say that doctor-assisted suicide goes against God’s will. Others fear that a patient's age and inability to pay medical bills may be used as criteria to determine who lives and who dies.

As of 2011, the Supreme Court has ruled against euthanasia, but many patients are still asking doctors for assistance.

Do you think that euthanasia should be an individual right or should it be determined by the courts? Is there a chance that physician-assisted suicide could go too far?

Good morning and afternoon my favorite students of all time!

Here is your daily vocab assignment. Please read the directions carefully, as the guidelines to your assignment have slightly changed...

Blog Title: Week 9 Vocab Defintions and Close Reading Passage
Assignment:

** Your week 9 vocabulary words are: alternative, previous, and strategy.
For each word, find its definition and at least one synonym to go with it.

** Read the critical reading passage below. Then, read the questions at the end and write a 5-sentence response. You need to answer all the questions. Your answer should be in complete sentences.

Should junk food be banned from school vending machines?

As childhood obesity and diabetes increases in this country, many Americans blame schools for selling unhealthy foods to students in order to make a profit for the schools. In previous years, schools have sold many high-fat and high-sugar items to their students, including cafeteria food in which the main vegetable is too often french fries.

Supporters of a junk food ban say that if parents are not going to provide healthy snacks for their children, then the school has no alternative other than to force healthy eating. One strategy some schools are using is providing tasty snacks for their students that are lower in sugar and fat content.

Critics argue that students are going to get junk food from alternative places anyway, so why not benefit from the sale of them? Additionally, childhood obesity is not going to decrease as a result of banning junk food sales; it involves a lot more than that. In previous decades, junk food items were sold on campuses, and yet the obesity rate was lower than it is now. Also, people say that this is taking away students’ freedom of choice and that the strategy of banning junk food will only make students want it more.

ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS USING COMPLETE SENTENCES. Response should be a MINIMUM (that means AT LEAST) FIVE sentences.
Is it the schools' job to decide what students should or should not eat? Are school vending machines really full of junk food? Does keeping junk food out of vending machines really teach kids to eat better?
