Monday, December 6

And........it's Monday! I hope that everyone enjoyed their weekend and that you were all super well-behaved students on Thursday and Friday while I was busy attending a million and one meetings (it's called hyperbole when you exaggerate a lot to make a point). Regardless, here are your assignments as you straggle yourselves in today...

Oh, and a few important notes:

** I am here today. I will be back at 1:30. Do your work if you feel like having a break today.
** Open house on WEDNESDAY.
** Ice skating on FRIDAY.

1) Vocabulary - In your blogs, complete the following assignment:
Blog Title - Week 7 Vocabulary Definitions & Examples
Assignments:
- You need to find the definitions for each of this week's vocabulary words. However, each word works as both a NOUN AND A VERB - this means that you have to FIND A DEFINITION FOR THE WORD AS A NOUN AND A VERB - total of TWO definitions.

** Import (noun & verb)
** Export (noun & verb)
** Function (noun & verb)

- Copy the following sample sentences:

Export (noun) - Wheat is one of our country's main exports.
Export (verb) - The U.S. hopes to export more cars to Asia next year.

Import (noun) - Oil is an important import that the U.S. receives from the Middle East.
Import (verb) - The U.S. will import oil from Iraq.

Function (noun) - The function of a car is to transport people.
Function (verb) - If you can follow directions, you will function in school much better.

2) PLATO - English/Language Arts
Go to: Written and Oral Conventions
Assignment: Correcting Sentence Fragments - Subordinate Clauses
Print the mastery test (with your name printed on it) and turn in. If your name does not print, you need to show Ms. S or Julianna your assignment on the computer and have us sign the printout.

3) Social Studies - Genocide Projects (Details of the Act - 2 paragraphs)

You need to write TWO paragraphs (minimum of 5 sentences per paragraph) that describes the details of the genocide you are studying. This paragraph needs to how the genocide was carried out and why the genocide even occurred. Remember, paragraphs require COMPLETE SENTENCES.

Type your response in Microsoft Word and turn it in on Edmodo. It is also advisable that you email yourself a copy (eventually it'll go on your website) and print a hard copy for your records in your folder.

Answer the following questions in your response:
a. How was the genocide carried out? What methods were used?
b. How were people targeted or identified?
c. Why was the genocide carried out? Use your background section and build from there - why did it even happen?

Example - For the Holocaust, you'd answer the questions in the following manner:
a) The genocide was carried out by exterminations, death and work camps that starved and worked people to death, and gas chambers.
2) Prior to the evacuation of the camps, all Jews also had to carry paperwork that set everything in motion for them to be sent to the camps.Jews were identified because they had to have a Star of David on their clothes. Upon arrival at the camp, they also had to get tattoos of an identification number. Other prisoners/victims were identified at Nazi discretion because they were deemed "defiant" or were political prisoners.
3) The genocide happened as a result of WWI. After WWI, Germany suffered a great depression. During the time of depression, the German people were looking for a leader to change their country. Hitler stood up as this man. However, Hitler targeted Jews as the cause of the German plight. As a result, he convinced many people that Jews needed to be exterminated. There was also a lot of propaganda that went into his "Final Solution" and people were persuaded that he was right. Even if they didn't believe he was right, many people did nothing to stop the Holocaust. Even if they weren't actively killing Jews or the other prisoners, the lack of people standing up and trying to stop the killing allowed
